Athlete Spotlight: Elijah King

After a spectacular finish, the Hastings JV Football team ends the season with a score of 26-7 against their opponent, the Brazoswood Buccaneers. Along with their smashing triumph against the Buccaneers, one of the JV football players gives his final thoughts on the game.

“The game was pretty easy overall and almost close in the beginning,” said JV football player Elijah King. “Our coaches were huge helps in pointing out what we needed to do for the next play throughout the game and of course we did our best too”.

A football game is usually a game that is played once and is given only one chance to innovate victory or defeat for both teams that are playing. For the players that play in the game, the stakes and expectations are generally erected highly on them, their fortitude, and their peak performance they can execute on the stage. Preparing for these once-in-a-lifetime moments takes crude training and any mistake can cause unbalance and victory to be deprived for either team. For Elijah, this last game was for his team.

“Physically, I knew I had the ability to do more for the team out in the field,” said King. “Mentally, I wanted to try my best but during the game, I couldn’t figure out how I was going to do that, especially in the beginning. Our speed was wack, and our defense was lacking since the other team kept breaking them in almost all our plays in the first quarter. I said before about our coaches being a big help. Halftime came in and coach gave us a pep talk about sticking together with our defense and actually paying attention to the way the other team was moving against ours”.

The match was the last match of the entire season and with the Buccaneers receiving a heavy loss on their end, Elijah thinks of their loss with sportsmanship and with a different mindset.

“The Brazoswood team were aggressive and they fought hard till the end,” says King. “Even if they lost, I respect that they still played no matter how much we scored on them”
