All the sports have stopped – what does it mean for student athletes?

The CoronaVirus is affecting the daily lives of lots of people. Schools, jobs, and businesses are being closed, causing people to stay home and become inactive. More so, our student-athletes are being highly affected. For some, seasons have been cut short and for others, off season training has been delayed.

The boys soccer team has played 16 matches with their last game against Brazoswood being cancelled due to the virus. With 7 wins, The team was on track to head to the playoffs. The devastating pandemic prevented the team from experiencing a great moment that could’ve changed the history of Hastings Soccer.
“Knowing that we were on the road to playoffs gave us more of that push to keep going to the end. I am going to miss every single one of these great talented players and it sucks that I didn’t get to say an official goodbye.” senior Kenneth Opara said.

Track season was also cancelled due to the virus after their meet at St. Agnes. They were about halfway through the season before it was delayed. For some track athletes, this season would’ve opened up many opportunities. Junior sprinter Naomi Adekolu expresses her concerns for the set back. “For some of us, this season would have allowed us to get college scouts to notice us. I also miss having someone to compete with everyday and push me to improve even if I may be tired,” Adekolu said.

In addition, the Softball girls only played 5 games before being cancelled mid-season. They still had lots of memories and games to experience before it was taken away from them. “Unfortunately, softball season was cut short, and it affected me because I hoped to win against the various teams. As a team, we remained positive which is really the best trait any team could have,”junior Asia Ashon said.

Football season ended in Early November before going into the off-season. Off-season training provides an opportunity for the athletes to run new plays, perfect their skills, and even build a strong chemistry amongst the team. Now that school is cancelled, the athletes must take it upon themselves to train individually. “Staying active during this time is important because it allows you to get ahead of the competition. Some people are taking breaks and watching Netflix while others are grinding and getting better, continuing their athletic prowess.” sophomore Basil Agboola said.
