Having the privilege to go to school is one of the most shared experiences someone can go through. Unfortunately, some people, including myself, have quite a harder experience. I live with quite a bit of medical issues, and while they seem insignificant to others, it interferes with my daily school life. To add, every day I wake up and take my prescribed medication. I have to use it every 4 hours to minimize the risk of having to go to the emergency room or doctor. Every school year, my mom has to fill forms just to have my medication at school. It can be a hassle when she has to advocate on my behalf to be able to carry certain medications on myself at all times. I get sick frequently and very intensely, which interferes with my attendance. This, in turn, causes my grades to drop and causes me to fall behind in most of my classes.
My mom stays busy juggling my school necessities and my doctor visits, but I am not the only one in my family with these issues. My sister has severe allergies, and she gets allergy shots twice a month. She has to miss school twice a month to receive these life changing shots. My brother has behavioral therapy three times a week and also has to miss school. It’s important for both staff and students to be understanding toward people with medical problems as we can’t control when we get sick, why we’re sick, or when we need to leave.
If you know anyone with any sort of medical issues, please be understanding and supportive of them, as many people don’t understand the struggles we face.
